We were excited to receive the Animas Ping last week, but Benny didn't want to set it up. At first I was puzzled. Every night I'd say, "Let's set up your new pump and get started!" and he would find some reason to put it off. "I'm too tired,"he said. Or, "I want to keep playing."
Finally, I asked him what was going on. He couldn't wait for the new silver pump to be delivered, why didn't he want to start using it? Turns out, he had a very good reason to wait. He didn't want to wait – at school.
This first school year has gone unbelievably well for us. As you may remember, I was pretty nervous back in August – but here we are at the last week of Kindergarten. Benny's teacher and her assistant have taken wonderful care of him, watched over him, counted carbs with him, and – oh, by the way – given him a great education.
They've only called us a handful of times all year, and it's always for a good reason (although I'd take their calls for any reason at all!). We've had Benny forget his lunch, a surprise pizza party, a few wear and tear problems on the inset/pump connection and the time Slade had to do some emergency repairs on the battery case. After 170 days of school, I'd say that's not bad.
Seemed that Benny agreed and he was worried about messing up the last ten. We never intended to ask Benny's teacher to learn how to use the new pump remote, a lot to ask with only a few days left of school, but he didn't realize that. Benny thought she'd have to learn a whole new system and he was very afraid of missing out – of missing recess, gym, centers. That his teacher would be fussing with his pump while he was cooling his jets.
So even though without the remote, it's the exact same pump, with the exact same process, we decided to leave it alone for now. Let Benny enjoy this last crazy week of Kindergarten, which so far has included a movie party – their reward for filling up the good behavior marble jar - a trip to a first grade classroom, and a funny picture day with all the kids in the same shirt. He shouldn't worry about missing a moment of that.
So he won't.
