Did you know a first grader could get migraines? I didn't. But Benny's been struggling with this for almost a year now. I've been hesitant to write about this and I'm not entirely comfortable now. It's just such a mystery.
We've eliminated foods that are likely triggers. That worked after 3 in a row last September. But the migraines came roaring back in January – one a week (almost always on Mondays) for six weeks so far this year.
We're doing what we're supposed to – keeping the food and activity diary. His blood sugar's been steady around all but one episode (when he went low) and the doctors don't think it has much to do with diabetes. I'm now investigating allergies, but I am so frustrated and sad for my little guy.
The migraines are all the same. Huge, horrible screaming headache, then he throws up, then he sleeps for a while. There is one funny thing to share (and if I don't laugh, I'm only going to cry). When he wakes up, Benny's always super hungry and he always asks for something you would never want if you'd just puked. "Do we have any tacos?" "How about some meat loaf?" He settles for Ritz crackers and ginger ale, but I know he wants to sneak into the kitchen. At least that hasn't changed.
I'm happy to hear your legit advice about migraines, but please think twice before posting. I'm still mad about the guy last week trying to convince me his magic shake would cure Benny's diabetes.
Have you ever thought of eliminating gluten?
I wish I could offer advice. I had my first at 15 or so, I’d been dx’d t1 at 12 and started my cycles the same year (sorry for TMI). Docs never thought it had anything to do w/the D, but maybe hormonal as I’ve had more recently. I feel so bad for your little guy. They are no fun. I get the ocular flashing symptoms and weird dull headache, but no nausea or bad headache. My mom & brother had/have them too, so perhaps it’s inherited. Or not – I know how frustrating the lack of an answer can be.
BTW if you see the guy with the magic shake cure, tell him he forgot mine – ! };-p Good luck and hope he’s doing better soon.
Stacey, My wife suffered from migraines. She would get 4-7 a week. I can not tell you all I went thru to find that cure… every medical avenue I went down including migraine centers…no help or relief.(seven Prescriptions a day) The only cure came from Dr. Maile Pouls. All I can suggest is to please talk with her as she helped my wife. After 8 week of treatment, my wife did not have migraines again for years. Now she will get them once in a while but we know where to find help. Please invest the time to research this for Benny, Best of Luck

I feel for Benny. I’ve only ever had one migraine and it was one too many. My only contribution – when I was a kid. The neighbor boy had the same kind of migraines, screaming pain headache, puke, sleep & wake up fine and starving. They never found a trigger and he eventually grew out of them. Hopefully Benny outgrows them soon!
oh man, so sorry benny’s going through this. i have no words of advice, just well wishes that you and the docs can get to the bottom of it sooner rather than later.
